Men’s tennis flies past Fargo
• On April 12, Macalester men’s tennis visited Concordia College Moorhead and handed them a 6-1 loss in Fargo, N.D.
• Jordan Doi ’26 and Charles Flaman ’29 won their doubles match 6-4. Doi also delivered in singles 6-2 and 6-2, and Flaman 6-1 and 6-2
• Kangyu Li ’27 and Derek Chen ’29 triumphed in a tiebreaker 7(7)-6(3), not letting the pressure in and winning the match. In their respective singles matches, Kangyu went 6-4, 4-6, 1(10)-0(8) and Chen 6-4, 6-4.
• Zach Dajani ’28 and Beckett Annes ’28 lost in a close-fought match 7-5. Danjani won singles 6-1, 6-3, but Annes lost 2-6, 6-2, 0(4)- 1(10).
• On April 14 the Scots hosted Saint Mary’s University (Minn.) winning 7-0 against the Cardinals.
• In the #1 doubles Flaman and Doi won 6-1, with Doi winning 6-1, 6-1 and Flaman winning 6-2, 6-1 in their respective singles matches.
• Doubles #2 had a very similar result with Chen and Li winning 6-0. Kangyu won 6-2, 6-1 and Chen won 6-0, 6-1 in their respective matches
• In the final doubles #3 the Scots kept cooking, winning 6-1 with Annes and Ezra Mahoney ’29 winning their match. Mahoney also won 6-1, 6-2 in their own singles match .
• Dejani won a singles match of the meet with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
Women’s tennis slams another MIAC win
• The Macalester Women’s tennis team visited Concordia-Moorhead in Fargo, N.D., on April 12, handing the Cobbers a decisive 5-2 loss.
• Savannah Haugen ’26 and Elizabeth Trevathan ’26 downed their opponents 6-4 in the #1 doubles contest. Haugen won her singles match 6-0, 6-4, along with Trevathan, who won 6-3, 6-4.
• Isabella Tamburrino ’29 and Darrian Streater ’29 beat their opponents 6-4 in the #2 doubles. Tamburrino lost her singles match 6-2, 6-2, but Streater took her match 2-6 ,6-2, 1(10)-0(7).
• In doubles #4, Greta Laurel ’28 and Sedona Crosby ’26 lost a close match 6-4. Laurel played a close battle but ultimately went down 5-7, 6-4, 0(2)-1(10). Meanwhile, Crosby played tiebreaker after tiebreaker for a 7(7)-7(3), 2-6, 1(11)-0(9) result.
Baseball beats the Cardinals twice, splits against the Cobbers
• On a sunny Sunday, April 12, Macalester baseball visited Concordia Moorhead for a doubleheader.
• The first game went 9-7 to the Scots, despite pressure on their relievers.
• Bobby Munoz ’28, Josh Planko ’26 and Nathan Gumagay ’26 each had two hits. Munoz and Planko scored a run and drove in two each, and Gumagay had two runs and two RBIs.
• Scots starting pitcher Jack Nussbaum ’27 was credited with the win, pitching 4.2 innings with five earned runs, five strikeouts, and seven hits allowed.
• The Scots’ second game of their doubleheader saw less offensive action, the Scots losing a heartbreaker 2-1.
• Holden Peacock ’27 led the Scots with three hits, and Raymond McCaskey ’26 scored the only run on a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning.
• Starting pitcher Josh Schmidt ’27 pitched 3.2 innings with one earned run on 46 pitches. Elliot Rowley ’28 and Haruto Mizuno ’28 came in for relief and only allowed one combined earned run.
• On Wednesday, April 15, the Scots hosted a doubleheader against Saint Mary’s University (Minn.)
• In game one, the Scots walked off the Cardinals with an 8-7 win at Nicholson Field.
• Leading the Scots’ hitters was Peacock, who played a monster game, going 4-6 with three RBIs and one run.
• John McMurray ’29 produced 4-5 with two RBI’s and one run and Tristan Jones ’26 went 2-4 with two runs and one RBI.
• Macalester closing pitcher Rowley was credited with the win for two innings pitched, zero earned runs, and one strikeout in 26 pitches thrown.
• Macalester baseball continued their luck into game two, with another one-run victory in a 7-6 contest against the Cardinals .
• McCaskey led the Scots in runs with two runs, one hit, and one walk.
• Scoring for the Scots was Peacock, McMurray, Tristan Lander ’28, Niko Alexander ’26 and Planko, who all had one run in the second contest of the day.
• The pitcher credited with the win was Nick Strezo ’27, who had one earned run allowed, with three strikeouts in 56 pitches.
Softball’s on fire; the MIAC is terrified
• The Macalester Scots visited Hamline University for a MIAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 11, taking the Pipers 7-4 in the opening game.
• The Scots were led by Dylan Tapia ’28, who scored three runs and drove in three more with a homer in the third inning.
• At bat, Ally Wolf ’28 and Elizabeth Welch ’27 each finished 2-4 with two hits and two runs. Alli Johnson ’28 with two hits 2-3, and Rebecca Heinze ’27 finished 3-3 for the game.
• Scots starting pitcher Martha Miller ’27 was credited with the win after pitching a complete game: three strikeouts, three earned runs allowed with 96 pitches.
• The second game was suspended due to rain after the fifth inning and did not resume.
• The Scots traveled to St. Peter, Minnesota, on April 12, for a doubleheader against Gustavus Adolphus College.
• The first game against the Gusties earned the Scots another muchneeded MIAC win in an 8-6 offensive showdown.
• Safiya Butler ’28 was 2-4 with two runs and one RBI, and Miller 2-4 with one run and two RBIs.
• Callia Holland ’28 was 2-3 with one run and 3 RBIs after blasting a 3-run homer in the eighth inning.
• Paige Schultz ’27 earned the win in her closer appearance, recording one inning, allowing only one earned run and two hits.
• Game two turned out a little bit closer, with the Scots dusting the Gusties 3-1 to earn the doubleheader sweep.
• The Scots were led by Butler, who was 2-4 with two hits and one run. Also with one run were Monica Montoya ’27 and Maya Thomas ’28.
• Scots pitcher Tess Bojorquez ’27 was credited with the win after she pitched a dominant complete game, allowing one earned run and striking out eight in 117 pitches.
Women’s golf drives their way to fourth
• On April 12 and 13, the Scots competed in the Kathy Kiepagan Spring Fling, finishing fourth with a score of 623. They earned a tie with Grinnell, leaving them just off the podium.
• Bailey Longfelder ’26 shot the lowest score of the second round with a two-under-par 70 and tied for 10th individual with a tworound score of 153.
• Macalester looks forward to the St. Kates/Carleton Gold invite on May 2-3.
Water polo wins CWPA title
• The Scots headed to the Collegiate Water Polo Association CWPA Division III championship last weekend on April 10, at Wheaton College (Mass.)
• Over the three-day tournament, Macalester played Connecticut College and Grove City College to earn a spot in the final against Carthage College.
• At the buzzer of a closely contested game, the Scots led 14-9, claiming the title of CWPA chip
