Women’s tennis goes 1-1 over the week
- Women’s tennis took on Carleton, first ranked team in the conference, early Saturday afternoon, April 4. Despite the 7-0 loss, the Scots played the Knights close in doubles, and Isabella Tamburrino ’29 lost a close one at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
- On Tuesday, April 7, the Scots rallied back at the Baseline Tennis Center against Hamline University and earned the W, 4-3.
- Savannah Haugen ’26 and Elizabeth Trevathan ’26 overtook their opponents 6-2 in the first doubles match.
- The No. 2 doubles team of Tamburrino and Dari Streater ’29, sealed the doubles point for Mac, coming out on top after a competitive match.
- After the Scots dominated three singles matches, it was Hamline that had to pay the piper.
- Last year’s All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) singles Haugen and fierce first-year Streater served success in their respective singles matches, each winning both of their sets.
- Trevathan and her opponent tied after two sets, but the standout senior was able to comeback in the tiebreak, earning the third and winning singles point for Mac.
Baseball wins two at Gustavus, splits against Bethel
- At Gustie Baseball Field on Tuesday, April 7, Macalester played a doubleheader against Gustavus Adolphus College, winning both games.
- In the first game, Nathan Gumagay ’26 scored the first run of the game on a bunt from Holden Peacock ‘27.
- A later hit by Raymond McCaskey ’27 brought home seniors Tristan Jones ‘26 and Niko Alexander ’26, securing the Scots’ win with a final score of 3-0.
- Ben King ’26 had an aristocratic performance, pitching a one-hit, nine strikeout shutout. King sat down 16 in a row to start the game and allowed only two baserunners, one walk and one hit, in the seven-inning contest.
- The Scots followed up their win in the first game with an 11-4 victory in the second.
- McCaskey brought in three of the Scots’ 11 runs, and the Scots came up with 12 hits to blow out Gustavus for their first sweep of the Gusties since 2018.
- Macalester won the matinee and lost the nightcap on Wednesday, April 8, snapping a 10-game losing streak against the Bethel University Royals in walkoff fashion.
- The Scots last beat Bethel in 2021 (almost five years ago to the day) when they split the season series at Nicholson Field. Wednesday held the same fate, as the Scots walked off the opener on a long single to left-center field from Tristan Lander ’28.
- Three singles found the bases loaded with two outs for Lander. He got a hold of the high fastball, lazered it to the fence, and Peacock trotted home to win it for the Scots.
- Winston Wisely ’29, Tommy Ball ’26 and Evan Kang ’26 combined to shut out the Royals over the final three innings.
- Game 2 found the Scots ahead early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first frame.
- The lead wouldn’t hold, as Bethel combined for 14 runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The nine-run lead wouldn’t be relinquished, and the final was 18-4.
- The Scots made a statement against a good team who won three straight conference championships from 2022 to 2024. They earned one gritty win and found timely contributions from the lineup.
- Going into the games, Bethel was considered a formidable opponent, ranked first in the conference.
- With 15 games to play, the Scots sit at second in the MIAC standings (16-9, 6-2).
Softball sweeps conference doubleheader
- On Wednesday, softball headed to Augsburg University for a doubleheader, capturing both wins 7-5 and 16-0.
- Right off the bat in the first inning, Martha Miller ’27 scored on a hit from Elizabeth Welch ’27 and later ran it back and tied the score 2-2 in the third inning.
- Welch singled again in the fifth inning, driving in Monica Montoya ’27.
- In the next inning, Alli Johnson ’27 hit a single, allowing Maya Thomas ’28 to run in, bringing the score to 4-3.
- Miller then cleared the bases with a three-run double to left, putting the Scots on top for good.
- In the second game, the Scots won 18-0, with contributions coming from up and down the lineup.
- These victories extended the Scots’ winning streak to five games and helped them pick up momentum for the remainder of the season.
- The Scots are 12-9 overall with 18 games left in their regular season. They sit third in the MIAC standings.
- Softball will take on the Hamline University Pipers at home on April 11 next.
Men’s tennis conquered by Carleton
- On Saturday, the men’s tennis team battled hard against Carleton College, but the Knights came armored up and beat the Scots 7-0.
- It wasn’t all losses for Mac: Jordan Doi ’26 and Charlie Flaman ’29 bageled their opponents in the opening doubles match (winning 6-0).
- Macalester will be back on home courts April 14, hosting Saint Mary’s University.
