Baseball nears first MIAC playoff berth since 2017
• The hometown nine played two key doubleheaders this week, the first in Northfield, Minn. against Carleton College and the second at home, hosting St. John’s University.
• The Scots swept Carleton by a combined score of 31-3 on Saturday, winning the first game 20-2 and the second 11-1.
• Nearly every Scot contributed on the offensive side, while Josh Schmidt ’27 and Jack Nussbaum ’27 held things down on the mound.
• Against the Johnnies on Tuesday, a walkoff single from Niko Alexander ’26 lifted the Scots in Game 1, 3-2, even as the visitors started one of the best pitchers in the conference.
• In game two, the Scots luck turned, as they fell 10-2.
• Next up for the Scots are two neutral site non-conference matchups against the University of Minnesota-Morris and Bethany Lutheran College.
• Their next conference matchup is a senior day doubleheader against Augsburg University, set for Wednesday, April 29 at Nicholson Field.
• This season has been nothing short of incredible for the Scots, who were not expected to be competitive in the conference. Now, they have a shot at the MIAC crown.
Softball splits the week, continues strong season
• Softball had a busy week, playing two games apiece on Thursday, Monday and Tuesday.
• They won the opening three games, including a sweep of Concordia College (Minn.). • Game 1 was an 8-0 mercy rule victory, as Martha Miller ’27 shut out the Cobbers on four hits while delivering the walkoff walk in the bottom of the fifth. She was also 3-3 at the plate in Game 1.
• Game 2 was similarly breezy, a 6-1 triumph thanks to timely hitting and another pitching gem, this time from Tess Bojorquez ’27. She allowed just one unearned run on eight hits.
• The Scots won Game 1 against Bethel University on Monday night behind Miller in the circle. The win moved them to 19-9 overall and 10-0 in-conference, and it was their 11th in a row.
• All streaks must end, though. Sloppy defense and quiet bats resulted in a Game 2 loss to an inferior Bethel team, 9-5.
• The bad juju carried over through the back-to-back, as the Scots headed to Northfield for a matchup against St. Olaf College on Tuesday.
• The team couldn’t get it rolling and lost both games, 3-2 and 6-4. Despite Miller holding the Oles to just one earned run in Game 1, the Scots’ defensive miscues came back down the stretch.
• Macalester will host St. Catherine University for a doubleheader at the Macalester Softball Complex this Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m
Men’s golf finishes last at Bobby Krig
• Men’s golf hit the links for the Bobby Krig Invitational, hosted by Gustavus, Saturday and Sunday at New Prague Golf Club and LeSueur Country Club. The Scots carded a three-round score of 973 and finished 16th.
• Ben d’Entremont ’26 led the Scots with a 238, tying for 57th place.
• Macalester will wrap the 2025-26 season at the Saint John’s Spring Invite on April 25-26 at Wapicada Golf Club in Sauk Rapids, Minn.
Men’s track and field splits up
• The Macalester Scots visited Hamline The men’s track & field team sent a small group to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Thursday, with the bulk of the team competing at the Carleton Relays on Sunday in Northfield, Minn.
• On Sunday, John Ihrke ’28 won the 1500 meters at the Carleton Relays, and the Scots also had the first, third, fourth and fifth finishers. • Student commencement speaker Hamza Mahamud ’26 won the 110-meter high hurdles, Jay Lebbaken ’26 won the 800 meters and Caleb Hatlevig ’28 won the 3000-meter steeplechase.
• It was a Scot sweep in the field: Austin Mills ’26 won the discus and the hammer throw, and Artur Porto ’28 won the shot put.
Tessa Myatt leads Women’s track and field
• Tessa Myatt ’27 broke the school heptathlon record with a 4,443 score this week, and was named MIAC Field Athlete of the Week.
• Myatt set or tied three personal bests in scoring 488 more points than her previous best of 3,955. She opened the competition on Thursday with a 16.20 (690 points) in the 100-meter hurdles, then matched her personal best of 1.59 meters in the high jump (724). Myatt tallied 711 points in the shot put with a toss of 12.75 meters (41- 10), then closed out Thursday with a 28.19 in the 200 meters (616).
• On Friday, Myatt long jumped 4.94 meters for 543 points to start the day, then threw the javelin 31.24 meters (500) for her third personal best of the meet. She finished the seven-event heptathlon with the 800 meters in 2:32.74 (659).
• Myatt broke the previous school record of 4,220, set by Katie Christenson ’04 in 2001. Myatt’s score ranks 22nd in Division III.
• The rest of the team competed at the Carleton Relays.
• The Scots will host the Rider/ Bolstoroff Invitational at Macalester Stadium this weekend.
Men’s tennis drops matches, wins one
• After a big Senior Day win last week, the Scots had dual duals this weekend, facing St. Olaf College on Saturday, April 18 and Gustavus Adolphus College on Sunday, April 19.
• The Scots combined for just one point over the two games, losing by a combined score of 13-1.
• The final against St. Olaf was 6-1, with the No. 1 doubles team of Derek Chen ’29 and Charles Flaman ’29 taking the win but not the doubles points. The lone notch for the Scots came from Flaman’s singles win.
• The team couldn’t get anything going against the nationallyranked No. 23 Gusties, dropping every match and losing 7-0.
• The Scots pulled off a win on Wednesday night, besting Hamline University 5-2.
• Mac plays the College of St. Scholastica on Sunday, April 26.
Women’s tennis splits doubleheader weekend
• The women’s team matched the men, playing St. Olaf College on Saturday and another nationally-ranked dual against Gustavus Adolphus College.
• The Olaf match was an instant classic, as the Scots trailed 3-1 headed into the final three singles matches.
• Savannah Haugen ’26 won her match in a tiebreaker to keep the Scots alive, and then Darrian Streater ’29 forced a tiebreak and won that one as well.
• The dual came down to the match at No. 6 singles: Sedona Crosby ’26. In the tie-breaker set, Crosby fended off two match points at 9-8 and 10-9, then played three strong points to close out the match, 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 1-0 (12-10) and gave the Scots the 4-3 victory.
• Nationally-ranked No. 23 Gustavus had other ideas the next day and slammed the doors on the Scots, winning every match.
• The Scots have two matches remaining this season and will play their final home match next, facing the College of St. Benedict on April 23 at 2 p.m.
