MINN 101: Lake appreciation and theory (or, why you should go to a lake right now)

Okay, team. We are two weekends into the semester. Hopefully they have been filled with friend-making, catch-upping and some solid homework-doing. But now, it’s adventure time, kiddos. The moment has arrived to pop the almighty Mac Bubble and get outside this weekend.
“But Jolena,” you say, “there are too many amazing Minnesotan activities/events/places to choose from!” You are perfectly right, of course. There are gazillions of great things to do here in the Land of 11,842 Lakes and each of those beauteous lakes would be a perfect place to start. Here’s why:

1) They’re famous for a reason. Trust the masses. Trust the reputation. Trust the license plate.
2) They know no seasonal bounds. Get in the habit of enjoying Minne- sota’s off-the-chain natural beauty all year long. This weekend is an ideal time to canoe or picnic, and come December you can try pond hockey, curling and cross-country skiing (give it a chance all you “I <3 Mountains” people. I see you). 3) They’re beautiful. They speak for themselves. Happy Instagramming! 4) There’s something for everyone. Whether you’re a “paved path stroll” or an “isolated kayaking” kind of person, a memorable time on a Minnesota lake is within your reach. To help you find just the right weekend destination, take the quiz below, and enjoy.

Which Twin Cities lake should you visit this weekend?

Mostly a’s: Très sophistiqué! Spend an afternoon basking beside Lake Calhoun, one of Minnesota’s most desirable lakeshore destinations. Have a picturesque picnic, rent a paddleboat/kayak/canoe, swim or go for a walk. Located in the heart of Uptown, Minneapolis, there is no shortage of shopping, restaurants and people-watching. Catch a film at the Macalester-approved, alternative Uptown Theater after an afternoon on the water—they’re showing Space Jam this weekend.
1 hour by bus, 50 min. biking

Mostly b’s: Relax on the water! Lake of the Isles is the perfect destination for you this weekend. Go for a jog, read a book, eat a picnic or rent a canoe/kayak to explore one of the Twin Cities’ most serene lakes. Don’t forget to check out the historic lakeshore homes! Though it’s not as remote as some of Minnesota’s most jaw-dropping lakes, it’s the perfect afternoon jaunt for the peaceful nature-lover.
75 min. on public transit, 45 min. biking

Mostly c’s: Ain’t no party like a lakeside party! Grab some friends and head on over to good lookin’, always poppin’ Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis. Grab some beach, rent paddleboards/kayaks/canoes, and stop by the concession stand for cheese curds, hot dogs and–if you are so inclined/legal–a nice beer.
