Students named to search committee for dean

The committee that will search for a new Dean of Multicultural Life is now complete, as Tinbete Ermyas ’08, Alex Flores ’08 and Cem Ernaz ’07 will join six previously chosen faculty and staff representatives to review applicants’ resumes and invite the top contenders to campus.

“I saw that there were some problems with the institutional structure as well as the way the [Department of Multicultural Life] worked,” said Ernaz, who applied and was chosen by student government executives. “I just wanted to provide input.”

Cultural organization leaders chose Ermyas and Flores.

Current Dean of Multicultural Life Joi Lewis resigned in February, citing low institutional support for multiculturalism.

Students mobilizing for Sunday immigration March

Students have begun spreading the word around campus in an effort to involve a substantial Macalester contingent in a march to the state capitol Sunday in favor of immigration rights.

Sunday’s march comes amid a wave of similar mobilizations nationwide in response to legislation recently passed in the U.S. House that would make it a crime to be in the U.S. illegally and impose stricter penalties on employers who hire undocumented immigrants.

“Locally, regionally and nationally, we’re all rallying behind the same things,” said Ana Najera-Mendoza ’06, who is involved with organizing students.

Students met Monday night to begin coordinating participation in the march. Students will also meet tomorrow morning on the second floor of the Campus Center to make banners.
