Editor’s Note: Last week, The Mac Weekly ran an article about Lee Nystrom ’73, a new appointee to the Board of Trustees. John G. Taft, President and CEO of RBC Dain Rauscher in Minneapolis, is another new addition to the Board. The Mac Weekly interviewed him by phone late last week.
Though he is not an alumnus, Trustee John G. Taft’s connection to Macalester dates back to the 1960s.
“I was an assistant to the mayor then,” he said. “I became familiar with people at Macalester. I worked with then-Mayor George Latimer for 15 years. In fact, he introduced me to [President] Brian Rosenberg and that’s how I made the connection.”
Taft spoke of why Macalester appealed to him.
“I admired its internationalism,” he said.
Taft said he has always had an interest in higher education.
“My father was Dean at Yale College and I always wanted to learn more about the challenges of an institution,” he said.
In addition to being a businessman, Taft is an athlete, a poet and contemporary art collector. He also worked as a reporter for 5 years.
