Multifaith Service to be held Sunday

This weekend’s Family Fest worship service represents a first for both the Weyerhaeuser Chapel and the newly formed Multifaith Council. “A Celebration of Religious Diversity: Unity in Diversity” will be the first specifically multifaith service held in the chapel and the first event planned by the council that will be open to the greater Macalester community.

In previous years, a nondenominational Christian service was held for parents. Council member Jessie Light ’08 said that the aim of the multifaith service is to be more inclusive of non-Christian traditions.

The service will be almost entirely student-planned and student-led, according to Light. Three students from different religious backgrounds will share reflections on topics related to the themes of unity and diversity.

Students will also lead the call-and-response reading, collective prayer and music. The African Music Ensemble will perform African gospel music and a Swahili version of the Lord’s Prayer will also be featured as a part of the service.

The service will be held at 10:30 this Sunday October 15 in Weyerhaeuser Chapel.
