Mac's Basement Lairs – The Infoshop (2 of 3)

By Shasta Webb

Location: Kirk basement
Hours: Sunday-Wednesday 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.Interested in socialism? Anarchy? How to dumpster dive? The Infoshop, located in the basement of Kirk, offers a plethora of informative sources about everything from punk music to hacking the internet for the purpose of creating anarchy.

The Infoshop is a small but spacious room equipped with ample tea-making supplies, cushy chairs, and eye-catching posters. It creates a mysterious atmosphere, and upon entering, one feels surrounded by all the great revolutionaries of our time.

The Infoshop has a healthy collection of books and magazines, including many archived issues of Macalester’s former magazine, The Hegemon. Covering topics such as First Aid, anarchism, direct action, prison abolition, indigenous resistance, and vegan cooking, the zines offer a little something for any curious Mac student. Henry Slocum ’13, pictured left, frequents the Infoshop, using it as a meeting place as well as a comfortable location to get work done.

Slocum explained that the Infoshop “is a good place to check out independent literature that’s not found in regular libraries. There are anti-copyright books and books on socialism and revolution that you won’t find in other places.
