I would like to stand behind Hannah Wydeven’s denunciation of sexist slang in colloquial and academic usage. I am continually astonished that sexism persists to such a great degree in everyday interactions even at a place as thoughtful as Macalester. Indeed, I have frequently been troubled by Wydeven’s column and have often found her conclusions to be problematic, at best. Therefore I applaud her insight in last week’s column about the usage of such terms as “bitch” and “rape.” I hope we will see more reflective, useful discussions like this in the future.
