Football team stays in the game, despite losses and injuries

By Patrick Murphy

The football team will travel to the Metrodome today to play the University of Minnesota Morris at 12:30 p.m. At 3-5, the Scots are hoping to close out their season at an even .500 with victories against Morris and Hamline. This past Saturday, the Scots fell to Martin Luther by a score of 28-14. Macalester’s offense was led by T. Joe Loiselle ’12 , who ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. Trevor Miehe ’11 threw for 160 yards and a touchdown to Kevin Finnegan ’11. The defense was led by Brian Foster ’11, who recorded 12 total tackles, despite still playing with a broken hand. Matt Hurni ’11 recorded nine total tackles and a fumble recovery.

Coming into the season, the football team’s main goal was to have a winning season. However, the going has been tough since losing star running back Jake McDonnell ’10 for the entire season in the season opener against St. Thomas. Foster, the leader of the defense, also missed four games with two broken hands. Since coming back, however, Foster has led the team with 23 tackles through two games. In McDonnell’s absence, Loiselle has filled in commendably, running for 830 yards and seven touchdowns.

Although a winning season is just out of reach, the Scots have battled every game, and are optimistic that they will be able to finish the season 5-5.
