Water Polo 6-3 over break, 3-1 in conference
- There’s a theme to this This Week In Mac Sports: successful spring trips! The water polo team had a busy week playing four conference games in Kenosha, Wis. before flying to California for five tune-ups against local schools.
- They held winning records in both portions of the break, going 3-1 in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) play with the only loss to Augustana College, 7-5. Augustana has been very dominant in the conference and also beat the Scots 13-6 in their home pool just a month ago.
- Their three conference wins were very close, with scores of 8-7, 12-10 and 15-14.
- Their stint in California finished with a blowout loss to Cal State Fullerton, but they went 3-2 over all, including a big over time win over the University of Redlands.
- They have four conference games left before the CWPA Division III championships in Massachusetts.
Men’s tennis posts 2-2 South Carolina trip
- The men’s tennis squad headed to Hilton Head, S.C. for four duals over spring break.
- They started and ended with wins over SUNY Oneonta and Salve Regina University.
- No. 4 Denison University took them down in the middle, but Charles Flaman ’29 earned them a point in the singles second matches. The final was 6-1. They also fell 7-0 to Stevens Institute of Technology.
Women’s tennis goes undefeated over break
- It was a short and sweet stint in South Carolina for the Scots, winning both their duals against Oneonta and Salve Regina.
- It was the continuation of a strong start to the women’s tennis season. The Scots move to 5-3 overall on the year. They’ll jump right into conference play against Bethel University this Sunday, March 29.
Baseball two wins over .500
- The Macalester baseball seniors own a new record for most games into the season with a winning record in their college careers. Previously, their best was just three games into the year at 2-1. Now, the Scots sit at 9-7 with one game until conference play begins.
- Their spring break trip took them to Orlando, Fla. where they faced stiff competition from teams across the country. The team achieved a 5-3 record on the week, with one game against Vassar College rained out.
- The trip was highlighted by a demolition of Elmhurst University, 21-1. The Scots scored six in the first, one in the third and nine in the fourth on their way to an eight inning mercy rule win.
- The other notable win was over Dominican University (Ill.) by a score of 5-4.
- Through 16 games, John McMurray ’29 leads the team in batting average and on-base plus slugging, with a .473 and 1.122 respectively. He also paces the Scots in RBIs with 17.
- Evan Kang ’26 has been lights-out in relief, maintaining an ERA of zero over seven innings pitched (five appearances).
Softball upsets No. 14 in nation, finishes 6-4 on break
- The softball Scots also headed south to the sunshine state, as they competed at THE Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. just outside of Orlando.
- They had a successful trip, posting a 6-4 record over the week.
- The Scots’ signature win in Florida was a 6-4 triumph over the No. 14 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
- It was the nightcap to a doubleheader, after the Scots beat Kalamazoo College 7-6 earlier that day on a walk-off base hit from Safiya Butler ’28.
- Martha Miller ’27 pitched all seven innings of that game in Kalamazoo. She held the potent Warhawk offense to just four runs and recorded seven strikeouts. Dylan Tapia ’28 had two RBIs to anchor the offense. addition to the six she threw against
- The Scots nearly toppled No. 12 Simpson College, taking a lead into the sixth but coming up short in extra innings. The final was 7-6.
- Butler was honored as MIAC Player of the Week after a scorching week at the plate.
- Butler had at least one hit and one run in every game last week, going 14-for-31 with 11 runs scored, four RBI, and four stolen bases in five attempts. In the win over Kalamazoo, she went 4-for-5 with a walk-off bunt single. She scored two runs each in wins over No. 14 UW-Whitewater and Wellesley, as well as in the loss to Simpson.
- The Scots get back to business in Minnesota on April 1, opening MIAC play against the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. In the meantime, they have a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin- River Falls this Saturday, March 28.
