Shannon shines bright as men’s basketball splits two
- The Scots wrapped up January basketball with a tough home loss to St. Olaf College on Saturday, Jan. 31, going into the second half with a 44-40 point lead, but eventually falling to the Oles in a close-fought battle 75-72.
- Behind Macalester’s 72 points, 30 of them came from star forward Noah Shannon ’26. His blazing performance saw him make 11 of 20 from the field, while adding 8 rebounds and leading both teams in scoring.
- Shooting 4-4 in his most accurate game of the season was Kyle Jilla ’27, who dropped a solid 10 point performance, with 5 defensive boards and 2 assists.
- The Scots started February off with a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) triumph against the College of St. Scholastica 87-77, slamming the Saints and handing them an L to even up the season’s series 1-1.
- Shannon continued his shiny senior season with 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.
- Shannon also reached a career milestone by scoring his 1,000th point, becoming just the 26th Scot in program history to eclipse that mark .
- Next, Macalester will host nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College at the Leonard Center on Saturday, Feb. 7, as the Scots look to close out the season on the right foot.
Women’s basketball outlasts St. Olaf, grabs momentous win
- The women’s basketball team ended the month of January at home, winning a barnburner against St. Olaf. The Scots slammed the door on the Oles 51-50, snapping their 12-game losing streak and securing a much-needed MIAC win.
- Sydnee Smith ’27 led the Scots with 15 points, as she shot 6-11 with three 3-pointers. She made Mac’s only threes.
- Smith and Ellie Corbett ’26 both recorded three blocks, adding to their top-ten ranking in blocks in the MIAC.
- The Scots faced a strong St. Scholastica squad on Saturday, Feb. 4, losing 70-49 in a game dominated by early defense, with the Saints pulling away in the third quarter with a road win.
- The Scots kept it close through the first two quarters, as the halftime drag show captivated the audience.
- Macalester will face Gustavus Adolphus College next weekend on Saturday, Feb. 7, as they look for their second MIAC win this season.
Men’s track and field runs fast, jumps even higher
- The Scots competed at the St. Olaf Invitational last Friday and Saturday, heating up the track season in Northfield, Minn.
- The Scots headliner was Ataa Mensah ’28, who leapt to victory in the triple jump, with Mensah jumping 13.47 meters to beat out nine others competing in the event.
- John Ihrke ’28 made school history by running a Scots record 1:53.39 in the 800m, finishing in a nailbiter second place.
- Austin Mills ’26 threw it well this past weekend. With a 16.05m in the weight throw, he beat his own school record.
- Hamza Mahamud ’26 ran a 8.92 second 60m Hurdles race, to grab the fourth fastest time in Scots history.
- Quinn Hoisington ‘27 ran a 8:47.73 in the 3k to steal the 10th fastest time in school history in that event.
- The Scots prepare next for the Gopher Classic on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
Women’s track and field runs all the way in Northfield
- The Scots also competed last Friday and Saturday, on Jan. 30 and 31, competing in Northfield at the St. Olaf Invitational.
- Ariella Rogahn-Press ’28 won the 200m with a 15.15 race. Rogahn-Press was also named the MIAC track athlete of the week! Ariella’s time wasn’t just fast enough to win the meet, but also to claim the school and facility records in the 200m. By breaking the school record, she broke her own mark, logging the 17th fastest result in the country so far this year.
- Tessa Myatt ’27 logged a 3150 point result in the Pentathlon, sneakily grabbing the second-best score in school history. She finished second in this event on the whole.
- Eva Abreu ’29 ran a 7.93 in the 60m to grab third place, but more importantly, the third-fastest result in school history. Abreu also won third-place in the 200m with a 26.41 run, securing the 7th fastest run in school history.
- More Scots finished in top-ten school history finishes, with Kate Fox ’28 finishing the 1,000m in 3:02.40, the eighth fastest in school history. Sammy Elis ’27 finished the 5,000m in 18:41.26, securing the 9th fastest run in school history and Alina Siodlarz ’29 scored 2433 in the Pentathlon to secure the 9th best score in school history.
- The women’s 4×200 team ran a 1:47.97 to secure the 8th-best finish in school history. This team was comprised of Abreu, Claire Beckley ’28, Emma Cunningham ‘28 and Rogahn-Press.
- The Scots look to Dinkytown next weekend on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse for the Gopher Classic.
