Dig Pink surpasses fundraising goal with large turnout

For a moment last Friday, the Leonard Center crowd was swallowed in silence. While the women’s volleyball team clung to a 2-0 set lead over the Carleton Knights, the Scots dug themselves into an 18-11 deficit in the third set. After coach Annie Doman’s timeout, Mac responded with a 14-7 run to set up a deadlocked 25-25 score. Much to the delight of fans, the Scots outplayed the Knights capping off a three set sweep with a statement 29-27 closing set win.

The victory was even sweeter as it was played before a high-capacity, pink-laden crowd on hand to support the Scots and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sponsored by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Dig Pink match along with the Oct. 5 Kick Cancer Scots football game helped raise more than $1,600 for the Side-Out Foundation, a breast cancer support and advocacy organization.

SAAC Vice President Anna Munson ’15 was impressed by the fan support.

“It was the biggest crowd I have seen at any single Macalester event in the last two years,” she said. “The crowd was so energetic and really brought some Macalester pride to the Leonard Center. It was great to see students and staff cheering on the team while also contributing to our fundraiser.”
