Women’s track and field compete at indoor MIAC Championships
- The women’s track and field team placed seventh with 52 points in the MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Saint John’s University from Feb. 27 to March 1.
- Tessa Myatt ’27 was a standout on the first day, with a fifth place finish in the pentathlon, within which she had the strongest shot put of the day.
- Friday’s highlight was the third place distance medley relay team of Ivy Coldren ’27, Claire Beckley ’28, Hadley Wilkins ’26 and Kate Fox ’28. Their time of 12:46.83 is Macalester’s ninth-fastest.
- In another record-breaking move, Fox earned sixth with a 5:15.67 mile, the fourth fastest time in program history. Other strong performances on the day included Ariella Rogahn-Press ’28 earning fourth in the 400m and Ingrid Norquist ’27 sixth in the 5000m.
- On the final day, Rogahn-Press beat her own 200m dash school record for second place with a time of 25.22. Myatt brought a first place finish for Macalester in the shot put, with the best mark in program history and the 31st best in Division-III this season.
- The whole team will return for the outdoor season in April, with some competing in the Wartburg Final Qualifier in March.
Men’s track and field concludes indoor season with two MIAC titleists
- The men’s track and field team finished fifth with 70 points in the MIAC Championships, highlighted by two first place finishes. The first, on Friday Feb. 28, was John Ihrke’s ’28 new school record of 1:54.53 in the 800m. The following day, Kalid Ali ’25 placed first in the 600m, the second-fastest in Scot history. His time of 1:22.02 earned him his first individual all-MIAC honors. Ihrke followed him in fourth, for the third-best time in program history.
- The distance medley team of Ben Crotteau ’25, Henry Schonebaum ’26, Ali and Tor Olsson ’25 placed second in 10:18.41, the third-best time in Mac history.
- Strong field performances included Austin Mills ’26 and Max Menache ’25 placing fifth and seventh, respectively, in the weight throw. Ataa Mensah ’28 and Riley Hodin ’25 were another strong force in the field, with fourth and eighth placements in the triple jump.
- They’ll join the women’s team for the Wartburg Final Qualifier before the outdoor season begins in April.
Water Polo puts out Firebirds
- The Scots won their last game before conference play 10-7 against Carthage on March 1.
- Anna Gaisser ’28 ended a 3-1 first quarter with a buzzer-beater to secure the Scot’s lead. A dry second quarter for the Scots left the game tied, but a seven-point second half secured the win.
- Alana Nadolski ’26 made three goals, and Elizabeth Matlin ’25 and Gaisser ended the game with two each.
- The Firebirds will have a chance at redemption in a rematch to open conference play on March 15, hosted by Austin College. The Scots will hope to hold their ground in the Lone Star State.
Softball splits another double header
- On Saturday March 1, these Scots faced Luther College and the University of Wisconsin La Crosse in a double header in Rochester, Minn.
- The first game, against Luther, was a low-scoring 4-1 win. The Scots put the first points on the board with a dramatic three-run home run by Tess Bojorquez ’27. Pitchers Rileigh Morlock ’27 and Paige Schultz ’27 held the Scots lead, allowing the Norse only one sixth inning run.
- The next game didn’t go as well for the Scots.The 9-0 shutout to the Eagles, who scored 6 runs in the first inning and 3 in the next, made for a twisted mirror of the Scots 13-0 first inning win last week.
- Next, these Scots will head to Florida over Spring Break.
Men’s Tennis shut-out (good) against Cardinals
- Men’s tennis is set to sweep the in-conference season, now at 2-0, and 5-1 overall. Saturday brought a 9-0 win against Saint Mary’s University. Wins came from all three doubles pairs Alec Sargent ’25 and Liam Lynch ’25 (8-6), Lucas Wood ’25 and Owen Lindstrom ’25 (8-4) and Kangyu Li ’27 and Beckett Annes ’28 (8-3).
- They also won their singles matches, with Beckett, Li, Wood and Sargent allowing their opponent less than 4 points each.
- They’ll try to maintain their streak when they face Luther College next on March 8.
Women’s Tennis shut-out (bad) against Cardinals
- Women’s tennis fell 0-9 to Saint Mary’s University on Saturday, tieing their conference record at 1-1, a cruel turn of fate from the men’s game on the same day.
- Despite the shut-out, many matches came down to the wire, such as Savannah Haugen ’26’s singles loss that went to a tiebreaker. Doubles also endured tight losses for Haugen and Elizabeth Trevathan ’26 (7-8) as well as Megan Twomey ’25 and Mary Jacobsen ’28 (6-8).
- They’ll aim to close those gaps in Minneapolis on March 7 when they battle St. Catherine University.
Baseball sweeps opening double-header
- Baseball opened the season with a two-win double header on Wednesday, March 5 against the University of Minnesota Morris at the U.S. Bank Stadium.
- The first game was a 5-4, where Macalester pulled ahead after being down 0-3 in the first 3 innings. The team made three runs in the fourth inning, and another two in the sixth. Josh Planko ’26 and Aram Dombalagian ’28 made two of those fourth inning runs off of a double by Stephen Paulsen ’26.
- They carried the energy into the next game for a __ win. Tristan Jones ’26 put the first points on the board with two runs in the first inning.
- Next for the team is their spring break trip to Arizona.
