Macalester’s values of internationalism, intellectual curiosity, multiculturalism, service to society, collaborative learning and global citizenship were important to us as students and they’re important to us now as alumni. Voluntarily recognizing the Macalester Undergraduate Workers’ Union is a perfect opportunity for Macalester’s administration to actively support those values. 

Seeing students organizing in response to inequality at Macalester College makes us proud to be alumni. Many of us were student workers ourselves when attending Macalester. alumni have shared powerful testimonies of their own experiences as student workers and why they support the Macalester Undergraduate Workers’ Union:

“I used to work as a Building Manager at the Campus Center. Our shifts would be canceled at the last minute and we were paid just over $9 per hour even when working into the early hours of the morning. As an international student, this was the only way I could earn money in the term time and the institution took advantage of our visa arrangements. Solidarity to all the student workers who are exploited with every hour that they work so the university with an endowment of god only how many zeros, can keep their margins high and their workforce fragile.” -Roan Ellis-O’Neill ’20

“I and so many of my friends from Macalester chose the school because we believed in things like solidarity, democracy and labor rights. I’m so proud to know that Mac students still come together to make more just working and living conditions for everyone. We all benefit from every labor victory.
