Brittany Lewis’09 to address senior class at ‘Halfway to May’ event

Campus Activities and Operations has announced the speaker for the annual “Halfway to May” event. Brittany Lewis ’09, a Mac alum who majored in political science and American studies, will share about her experiences after graduation.

The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 20 in the Hill Ballroom. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and the event will end around 9:30 p.m., with each senior leaving with a complimentary pint glass. Beverages and snacks will be provided.

After Macalester, Lewis earned an M.A. in feminist studies at the University of Minnesota and is a Ph.D. candidate in feminist studies at the University of Minnesota as well. Last spring, she returned to Macalester’s campus and taught a class in American studies.

Allison Greenlee, Assistant Director of Campus Activities and Operations, expressed enthusiasm that Lewis’ experience of “being on the other side of the classroom” would be insightful for students reflecting on past experiences at Macalester and contemplating the future.

“This program creates a space for the senior class to reflect on being “halfway to May,” Greenlee said. “The academic year can go by so fast and it’s important to reflect and recognize this important time in life.”

Guest speakers for the program will share their experiences of leaving college and preparing for their life after graduation. Organizers stressed that the program will be casual and student engagement is encouraged. The event will end with a question-and-answer session.

“I am excited to have Brittany because she was involved in many different aspects of Macalester as a student, athlete and org leader,” Lucy Westerfield ’15, a student who helped coordinate the event, said. “She has continued to develop her education in a path that I think a lot of Macalester students are interested in and, for seniors, it will be nice to hear an engaging alum talk about a future many of us may be able to identify with.”

Greenlee hinted at topics Lewis might focus on as she discusses the often unnerving situation seniors face as graduation quickly approaches.

“She’ll reflect on how she came to be where she is now, including the realities of post-undergrad life,” Greenlee said. “She’ll share the most valuable and challenging parts of her Mac experience [and speak about] balancing graduate studies, family, returning to Mac as a professor and why her message is ‘never stop learning.’”

James Lindgren ’15, another student organizer of the event, urged everyone to attend.

“I have heard [Lewis] is a very engaging speaker and was very liked when she was here as a professor,” Lindgren said. “I encourage all seniors to come, grab a beer and listen!”
