The women’s golf team experienced great improvement this past season, culminating in a seventh place finish in the MIAC Championships. The Mac Weekly recently sat down with golfers Maddie Arbisi ’14, Madeline “Kelso” Brasunas ’14, Grace Caird ’13, Suzanne Dufault ’15, Kyla Martin ’15, and Caitlin Opperman ’12 to discuss the past season, each other and the team dynamic as a whole.
TMW: How would you describe being on the team?
Kelso: Peachy.
Grace: Everyday is different, but everyday is fun, so it’s a lot of fun.
Maddie A: Always a fun time.
Kyla: It’s an interesting dynamic.
Suzanne: It’s like being in a family.
What’s the best part of being on the team?
Kyla: The Under Armour gear.
Maddie A: Playing golf every day.
Grace: Being able to play these amazing golf courses every single day and being around cool people.
Kelso: Ditto!
Grace: And we get to get coached by someone (Coach Martha Nause) who knows what’s up. She knows her stuff.
Maddie A: She’s got a lot of experience and can handle any situation we fall into on the course. We’re lucky in that aspect.
If the golf team were a family, who would be the various family members?
Grace: Maddie A. would be the mom. Kelso: I’m the eccentric great aunt with six cats.
Maddie A: Suzanne is the little sister who just loves life. Kyla is the dad, always making sure that people have eaten. Stern but loving.
Kelso: And Grace would be a sister, since she’s sisterly.
Maddie A: Caitlin would be the grandmother, always looking out for everyone. If you have a problem, she’ll fix it. She’s there for everybody.
Caitlin: Technically my nickname is Dad though. It’s a bit confusing.
Grace: Yeah, and I’m the crazy irresponsible little sister, who’s all over the place.
Maddie A: Wait, younger than Suzanne?
Kelso: No, no.
Grace: Yeah, but somehow I always get my shit together.
How would you describe last season?
Suzanne: It was a really good experience; lots of fun.
Maddie A: We made a lot of strides towards where we want to be.
Grace: Yeah, it was a season where we all found our strengths and where we fit in on the team.
Caitlin: It seemed like we just kept improving all season.
Maddie A: Our best is yet to come, without a doubt.
Kelso: I would have to say that last season was a lot like Totoro because it was very spirited. We went far, we flew to many places, metaphorically.
What was the craziest thing that happened last season?
Maddie A: Didn’t like three people get hit by golf balls?
Grace: Yeah, Suzanne got hit by a golf ball. Kelso: Kyla got hit by a golf ball twice.
Caitlin: I wonder who did that…
Maddie A: But that always happens. Wait, Martha danced to ‘Low’ by Flo-Rida and T-Pain.
Caitlin: That is definitely in my top-5 Mac Golf moments.
Grace: What? I missed that.
Maddie A: Yeah, on the last day at conference.
Grace: And she was singing along to it?
Maddie A: She had it in her headphones, just groovin’ to it.
Grace: It was fitting since we went low as a team that day.
Kelso: I hit a turtle when I was putting.
Kyla: Probably Matt Caminiti ’13 and Dan Allen’s ’12 obsession for Suzanne.
Suzanne: When Mark Thomson ’13 and I beat the three freshman boys at basketball during Preseason, 23-3.
Bobby Jones once said ‘golf is a game that is played on a five inch course-the distance between your ears.’ How do you stay sane on the golf course?
Maddie A: I don’t. It’s a constant struggle, but that’s what makes it the greatest game.
Kelso: I try to not be so serious and if I have a bad shot, I try to let it go.
Kyla: I don’t think. I sing and dance on the course.
Grace: Yeah, it’s tough to stay focused in a five hour round. There’s got to be some sort of repetition. I usually have a song stuck in my head. Sometimes it’s Wiz Khalifa. Sometimes it’s the foulest lyric from a rap song that I can think of and it just goes through my head the entire round. Other times it’s a more mellow song, like Feist.
Suzanne: I sing a lot of songs in my head and try to stay as positive as possible.
Caitlin: I picture Martha dancing to ‘Low’.
If there was one song that would describe the golf team, what song would that be?
Maddie A: ‘Like a G6′ by The Far East Movement.
Kelso: ‘Teenage Dream’ by Katy Perry.
Caitlin: ‘Champion’ by Kanye West.
Kyla: ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley.
Maddie A: Any song that we all know and sing together. A community song.
Grace: Yeah, we have ‘Ooh Ahh’ by Grits.
Kelso: The songs that would describe the golf team would be the songs that we listen to in the van. ‘And We Danced’ by Macklemore.
Grace: Or whatever song Kyla is listening to in the back of the van.
What are you looking forward to most next season?
Maddie A: Oh, our trip to Jekyll Island in the spring.
Kelso: Jekyll.
Kyla: Jekyll.
Grace: Jekyll and going low.
Suzanne: More good times and more low scores.
Caitlin: Finishing on a low note.
