The Sweet Sounds of MDG

By Kate Keleher

It’s Sunday night and in a room tucked away on the second floor of the campus center, the chilly Minnesota air is being warmed by the sweet vibrations of seemingly random musical snippets, chuckles, and the occasional guffaw. That’s right, the ‘iPod shuffle challenge’ has arrived at the weekly Macalester Development Group board members meeting! Macalester Development Group is a chartered student organization at Mac that works to involve students in discourse and engagement surrounding global development. Meetings are at 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights in Davis Court in the IGC. The board meeting consists of four students, brought together by a passion for development. They reveal another side of themselves through their music taste, as represented (somewhat inaccurately?) by the first five songs that come up on shuffle on their iPods. Chances are you’ve heard these kids names in sentences sprinkled with phrases such as “socially active,” “involved” or perhaps even “saving the world.” But do you know what tunes are eeking out of their headphones when they walk to class? What they listen to at the gym? What they tap their toes to in class? Prepare to be surprised. If I wanted to be THAT girl, I would argue that the results represent the diversity of the Macalester student body. But I’ll leave it up to the reader to decide.
