Swings will return to campus in spring

Once a hallmark of the Macalester campus before they were removed from their space between Olin-Rice and the old Fieldhouse to make room for construction of the Leonard Center, the much-fabled swings will be on their way back this spring, said Mark Dickinson, Director of Facilities Services.Since their removal, the swings were put in storage. Returning them to a usable location on campus will prove to be more difficult as the space they once occupied has since been swallowed by the Leonard Center.

Dickinson says Facilities is considering some “alternative and appropriate locations on campus” for the Macalester icon.

But the swings will not be the only minor change to campus next year. Recently, a small gazebo was donated by the Class of 2004, and since then Facilities has been looking for ways to accommodate it.

“We are considering locations on campus where a gazebo, or a structure that would be in the spirit of the class gift of a gazebo, would be appropriately placed,” Dickinson said.

The gazebo will be installed sometime in 2009.
