A hub for HOURCAR, a Twin Cities car-sharing service, has opened in the parking lot across from Patagonia on Grand Avenue with combined sponsorship by Macalester and Patagonia. The car, a Toyota Prius, occupies one space in the lot and is available for use by HOURCAR members, who choose from a variety of plans that involve monthly fees and charges by mile.
The hub near Macalester, which is one of 14 across the Twin Cities, is part of a two-year pilot program. As part of the arrangement, the college provides $10,000 a year to cover car costs, Tom Welna ’86, who runs Macalester’s High Winds Fund, told The Mac Weekly in April.
HOURCAR, which touts its service as “easy, earth-friendly” and “economical,” is non-profit and run by the local group Neighborhood Energy Connection.
