Lost and Founder's Day

By Sarah Krumholz

Did you remember to celebrate “Lost And Founder’s Day” this year? If you don’t know, it’s an obscure holiday in celebration of all things lost and found, all things collected and left behind; in recognition of the long journeys objects travel, weaving ties between people; in honor of the stories objects can tell if you know how to listen. The following represents just a small sampling of the many responses I received from students here at Mac:What’s the most interesting thing you ever found? Where/how did you find it?

“a journal that a crazy person lost – it was full of McDonald’s receipts” “a finger in my burger at Coffee News” “a picture of my uncle with hair!” “a duchess’ tombstone in my neighbor’s garden” “(found while cleaning Turck Hall as a student custodian) giant inflatable penis, squirt gun, cowboy costume” “Atlantis, right near Iceland” “$100 bill” “a positively ENORMOUS bra in the gutter when I was 10” “I found shoes once just sitting in a park. I took them and still wear them sometimes” (two separate people had this same story!) “half a pizza at a bus stop in Minneapolis” “Pros Seng” “St. Paul: a city iIdiscovered in the northern U.S.” “really shiny Cadillac hubcap on Grand Ave.” “a cane made out of an armadillo tail in a CIA agent’s basement”

What’s the most disappointing (or most recent) thing you lost?

“my fast metabolism” “Pandora’s box” “an electric tea kettle” “my keys” “that one huge black dildo” “young innocent 4th grade love” “my dog” “my Nalgene, fall of Junior year” “my roommate’s water bottle” “my iPod” “a necklace; my brother and I each had the same necklace until I lost it” ” “the innocence of youth. And a really great gray tank top from the GAP” “a handknit cowl” “my D-key. That’s $30 of disappointment right there.” “this is gonna sound weird, but a rock.It was really cool looking and I was really sad when it disappeared” “my penguin earring” “my mind” “my Kermit the frog button” “my virginity–haha! just kidding, probably my bus pass” “i keep losing my hat” “my heart and my wallet. They are not one and the same”

You find $5 on the ground. Do you take it? What do you spend it on?

Two people would leave it there. This is what everyone else would spend it on. (Apparently we have a very dehydrated and hungry group) “my ‘activities’ fund” “1 bottle of 3 buck chuck and a cup of coffee” “chicken mcnugget meal” ” taro chai shake from Tea Garden” “candy” “junk food” “boba tea” “coffee” (x7!!) “twix or twizzlers” “margarita mix” “stuff from the vending machine” “yeah ima buy you a drink” “food” “smoothie” “lunch” “raspberry cheesecake at Coffee News” “yes, beer presents” “laundry money” “cigarettes” “shoes” “ho’s and tricks”

What’s the most interesting place you ever got lost? (People can be lost and found too!)

“Detroit (?)” “west coast of Madagascar” “in Palmer Fliss’ eyes” “the woods in Vermont” “Macalester” “my friend’s car broke down in Mankato, so we got lost there. It wasn’t that interesting but we got interviewed by the Mankato news about the health risks of excess cell phone usage.” “El Alto, Bolivia (La Paz Plaza does not equal La Paz)” “my ex-girlfriend’s basement. That was awkward.” “Sevilla, Spain” “in the supermarket” “Norway” “Mall of America” “locked outside a Madrid hotel at night. Twas not good” “forest in northern Japan” “Debrounik, Croatia” “mountain climbing on horseback in Lesotho” “Olin Rice

Valuable info. Lucky me I found your site by chance, and I am stunned why this twist of fate didn’t happened in advance! I bookmarked it.

I do not even know the way I finished up right here, but I assumed this submit used to be great. I do not know who you’re however definitely you’re going to a well-known blogger in the event you aren’t already 😉 Cheers!
