Day of Change and Exchange returns

By Kaia Arthur

Macalester will host its second “Day of Change and Exchange” Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to address issues of inclusiveness and ethnicity. “The student recommendation from last year was to create a communication day at least once a year,” Vice President of Student Affairs Laurie Hamre said.

The first Change and Exchange day was held in Kagin Commons on April 11, 2007, between 11:50 and 2:10 for students to discuss racism and the means of creating an environment of equality. In response to student demand, President Rosenberg cancelled classes for the session. Between four and five hundred students attended.

“This year, students suggested we move beyond ethnicity and race to discuss the creation of a welcoming environment,” Hamre said. “We’re still looking for people to form a committee to finalize the details [of discussion topics].”

Lunch will be provided at the event.
