Volleyball wraps winless weeks
- While they only had two chances over two weeks, the volley Scots came away without a win over fall break in what has been a 2025 campaign full of adversity.
- The squad pushed Saint Mary’s University (Minn.) to five sets before losing 2-3 in front of a raucous Mac Fest crowd on Saturday Oct. 11.
- It was followed by a quick midweek trip over to Northfield for a 1-3 loss to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) leaders St. Olaf, where they worked hard to take the first set but then lost three straight.
- They sit at 3-17 overall, and have yet to find a victory in conference play.
- They’ll be in action tonight, hosting Augsburg University at 7 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
Men’s tennis serves up season with a close match
- Men’s tennis started their 2025-26 campaign in Cloquet, Minn. on Saturday Oct. 11 where they fell to University of Wisconsin-Superior by just one point.
- The Scots won the second doubles match but dropped the first and last, so the Yellowjackets took the doubles point to start up 1-0.
- The two teams drew in singles play, with Derek Chen ’29, Jordan Doi ’26 and Charles Flaman ’29 taking home three matches and three points for the Scots.
- They couldn’t get the fourth point in singles play, and so the Court Coos lost 3-4.
- Men’s tennis will return this spring.
Women’s tennis swept in opener
- Mac women’s tennis also visited UW-Superior and played ten matches in Cloquet, Minn. on Saturday Oct. 11.
- While there were some tightly contested third-set tiebreakers, the Scots were unable to bring home a match and were felled by a score of 0-7.
- The Scots will rest and recover, resuming their schedule in spring 2026.
Football loses to one good team, one good player
- In their first visit to Collegeville, Minn. in a quarter century, the Scots faced national No. 11 Saint John’s University in what can only be described as an uphill battle.
- It was a beatdown right out of the gates, with SJU gaining over 600 yards of total offense and taking a 56-0 lead into the half.
- The Scots were trodden on 70-0. They were outscored 35-0 in the second quarter.
- The Scots returned to John Leaney Field against Augsburg University last Saturday.
- It was a much closer contest, with the Scots taking an eight-point lead into the final period of play. They were solid through the air and on the ground, and on defense (until the fourth quarter).
- It was a disastrous fourth quarter, as the Scots were outscored 19-0 to lose their lead and hopes to contain top talent Tyrone Wilson of the Auggies. He scored two touchdowns of more than 50 yards through the air to sink the Scots.
- The Scots now sit at 2-4 overall and 1-4 in conference play, and they’ll travel to national No. 6 Bethel University — who handed SJU their lone loss — next week in what should be another tough matchup.
Men’s soccer’s flawless fortnight clinches MIAC playoff spot
- The Scots outscored opponents 14-4 over four matches, all wins, to clinch a spot in the MIAC playoffs.
- They kicked it off at Mac Fest, opening a doubleheader with a 2-1 win over Saint John’s that included their quickest goal of the season: under three minutes into the first half.
- They then traveled to Moorhead, Minn. and dismantled the Cobbers of Concordia in an eight-goal barnburner. They fell behind early, but charged back and won 6-2.
- Zach Liptzin ’27 was the hero in the fortnight’s final match, a 3-0 win over Gustavus Adolphus. The Scots clinched a spot in the playoffs following that win and will fight for seeding the rest of the way.
- Then, hosting College of St. Scholastica, they completed yet another comeback for yet another win to continue their win streak. It was a 3-1 win featuring one own goal from CSS.
- They’ll stay in St. Paul but will travel to Hamline for their next matchup on Saturday. It’s their penultimate MIAC matchup.
Women’s soccer continues hot streak
- Women’s soccer defended home turf and completed the doubleheader sweep over St. Benedict College on Mac Fest Saturday, 3-2. It was nearly a miracle comeback for the Bennies, who netted two second half goals but fell short.
- It was followed with a 1-1 draw in Moorhead, Minn. as the Cobbers kept it close the whole way.
- They then traveled to St. Peter, Minn. to face off with Gustavus Adolphus. It was a huge comeback conference win, with Maia Lemov ’26 finding the winner.
- It was an undefeated fortnight for both soccer squads, as the Scots won yet again on Wednesday night, 3-2 over St. Scholastica. It was two first-half goals and a halftime lead that wouldn’t be relinquished as the Scots look to sneak into the MIAC playoff.
- They will also play Hamline away, Friday afternoon, to continue their push for glory.
Men’s cross country runs hard
- The Scots finished 32nd out of 36 competing teams at the Augustana Interregional Invitational in Rock Island, Ill.
- Chase Fitterer ’29 paced the Scots, coming in 145th overall.
Women’s cross country preps for MIACs
- The Scots finished 17th out of 40 squads at the Augustana Interregional Invitational.
- Ingrid Norquist ’27 continued her strong season with perhaps her best performance yet, placing 12th out of 349 finishers in an elite field.
- The Scots will go to the MIAC championships next on Nov. 1 at Highland Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn. Perhaps it will be a home-field advantage.
