Every week The Mac Weekly speaks with a DJ on Macalester’s radio station, 91.7 WMCN. This week we sat down with Adam Rogowski ’19.

TMW: What is your show, and what can a listener expect when tuning in?

Adam Rogowski: My show is “Deeper Than Space Tracks.” It’s a great name … definitely not based on an inside joke that no one at Macalester gets. It’s also related to the kind of music my show plays—tracks deep in the album. I’ll play a hit song by an artist and follow it up with a lesser-known song from a little deeper in their albums … maybe a song from three albums before they got big, which is actually really good but had a style totally different from their other stuff. And sometimes I’ll just play a song that isn’t in their top ten on Spotify.

What do you try to accomplish with your program?

Back home, I have a great speaker system. I have a record player in my room; I’ve got big ol’ speakers. But here, if I really want to listen to music properly, I’ve got to find a place with some really nice speakers with deep bass. And the radio station has that. So I play my music and turn it up really loud, hopefully not annoying any of the lovely denizens of 30 Mac.

But, really, more than that, I feel like it’s a really nice way to share great music from artists that people may or may not know. And it’s a way of communicating and reaching out to people that I no longer see. Whether it’s my parents or my friends from home [Corvallis, Oregon] who are now abroad or in other places, I feel like it’s a very community-oriented thing, having a radio show. I’m talking to them and they’re texting me back.

Who are some lesser-known artists that might be heard on “Deeper Than Space Tracks”?

I was thinking about playing some of the Great Unwashed, which is a pretty niche band, and the Clean. Both are New Zealand bands from the ’80s. Twin Peaks is really good. Whitney recently got big, but I’m probably going to play them at some point soon.

A lot of the bands I know well, that I can play a hit song and a lesser-known song from, are bands from the ’60s, the ’70s, the ’80s. I’m still working on catching up to the 21st century. But you know what? If it’s going to be something, it might as well be from the ’60s or ’70s.

What’s the worst thing you’ve listened to recently, and what’s the best thing you’ve listened to recently that you didn’t know about beforehand?

I was in Ikea today [Tuesday], and they started playing Owl City. This is divisive: I have some friends near and dear to my heart who say they like Owl City, and I can respect you liking an artist I despise. But Owl City not only just doesn’t do it for me — it reminds me of middle school. And that’s never a good thing.

Things I’ve really liked … Recently I listened to Spoon’s latest album [They Want My Soul] and found some stuff deeper in that [that] I thought was really cool. I’ve also really, really been liking Night Moves, a Minneapolis band. I thoroughly enjoyed all the songs on their latest album.

Do you have any final thoughts that you want to put out to the Macalester community?

I would like everyone to listen to “We R In Control” by Neil Young, especially if you’ve never heard him before. Also, anything after Stop Making Sense by the Talking Heads is not good. Don’t listen to it.
