First-year cross country runner Lydia Simpson ’20 is a woman of many talents. In high school, she was student government president and treasurer in addition to running cross country and track, as well as swimming. Her senior year, she served as a captain of her track team. And this past weekend she ran her first collegiate meet for the Macalester Fighting Scots at the St. Olaf Invitational, finishing in the top half of performers.
It is safe to say that Simpson has loved her experience on the women’s cross country team so far. I didn’t have to prompt her much before she started gushing about the team environment and culture. “[The team is] super supportive and friendly. They are good teammates and good friends,” Simpson said.
Outside of cross country, Simpson hopes to write for The Mac Weekly and get involved with creative writing on campus. She has no intended major and is still finding herself. She struck me as a very humble, down to earth young woman with immense drive and work ethic, and she will continue to be an excellent addition to the Macalester community.
Also, Simpson has been known to fall asleep in Arby’s.
