MCSG discusses student housing, mock border wall

The MCSG meeting started with a visit from a member of the Mac-Groveland Community Council, a council that deals with local governance issues. The member stressed a desire to develop a partnership with Macalester College, and urged any MCSG members or Macalester students interested to attend board or committee meetings. The meetings are open to anyone, and on your third meeting attendance you become a voting member. The Council is currently writing a 10-year plan, and there is a section in the plan about student housing, so they would love to get student input. The board meets once a month, as does each committee. The board meeting is the second Thursday of every month at the Edgecumbe Recreation Center, and everyone is welcome.

Elsa Goossen, in charge of the Mock Border Wall, also spoke to MCSG about the evolution of her project, and the Legislative Body decided it was a great time to start conversations about the process of seeking administration approval for projects and what the guidelines for those projects are in an effort to avoid a similar controversial situation in the future. Two community chest requests were denied. The Alternative Faith Association became chartered, while Consonat was unchartered. ACLU was approved $800 to bring a speaker to campus and Visceral was approved $1,000 for their annual breakdance battle.

DEPARTMENT OF MULTICULTURAL LIFE

Queer Cabaret, Students of Color Retreat registration

Tomorrow, Oct. 18, QU will be holding a Queer Cabaret on the MGO Stage of the Campus Center from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, President Brian Rosenberg will be the guest of honor at a fun and informal installment “In the Kitchen With . . .” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Cultural House.

The Students of Color Retreat will be on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Retreat attendees will meet on Davis Court at Markim Hall. To attend this event, complete the Google Docs form on the DML website by Oct. 21.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Wellness Wed. led by new Chaplain, bust workshops start

This week’s Wellness Wednesday will be led by Macalester’s new Chaplain and Associate Dean for Religious and Spiritual Life Kelly Stone. Stone will be leading a discussion on self-care and issues that affect students specifically at Macalester. Wellness Wednesdays are held in Wellness Lounge of the Leonard Center from noon to one on Wednesdays.

There will be a What the Health event in the Leonard Center Atrium on Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. A flu shot clinic has been scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 29th from 4 to 6 p.m.

Bust workshops will start on Thursday, Oct. 30th at 8 p.m. Email [email protected] to pre-register. Pre-registration is required for this event. New physical activity classes begin on Nov. 3 with registration beginning on Monday, Oct. 27. Descriptions of classes can be found on the Health and Wellness website.

Drunken zombie Santa enters Mac-Groveland home; frightens teenagers

A heavily intoxicated University of St. Thomas senior dressed in a Santa Claus costume and wearing zombie makeup walked into a home near Sargent and Cretin avenues at 9:45 p.m. Saturday night.

A 14-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister were at home and expecting their parents to return soon. The boy went to the door to greet his parents and found the man instead. He yelled to his sister (who locked herself in the bathroom and called their parents) and ran in fear out of the house and into the neighborhood, yelling for help.

The boy also called 911 as soon as he could, and by the time the police came, the intoxicated invader had thrown up in the house and passed out. The man was cited for trespassing, removed from the premises and transported to the detox center.

PROGRAM BOARD

PB presents “What If,” makes final plans for Winter Ball

Program Board has been putting the final touches on the planning for Winter Ball and plans to release information soon.

Showing of “Guardians of the Galaxy” has been postponed and Program Board will instead be showing “What If,” tonight at 8 p.m. in the John B. Davis Lecture Hall. “What If” is an award-winning romantic comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan and Megan Park and focuses on a relationship between two best friends that may be something more.

CAMPUS ACTIVITIES AND OPERATIONS

New policies for Kagin dances; ID required, only one guest

Campus Activities and Operations (CAO) is working to spread awareness of the current Kagin guidelines and policies. To gain entry to a Kagin Dance the Macalester ID policy is as follows:

All students must show a current Macalester College student ID at the door of the dance. Students without a Mac ID will not be allowed to enter.

Macalester students may bring one non-Macalester student guest. If you bring a guest, you are responsible for your guest in attendance.

In addition, there are no people allowed on stage, and intoxicated people will be turned away at the door.

Student organizations sponsoring dances must have four organizational members present who are identified in advance and agree to be sober and serve as hosts for the entire event. The identified organization members must be responsible for the event. Prior to the event, org leaders are also responsible for meeting with a CAO staff person to sign a form, a part of the existing security form procedure.
