Campus security officials were notified of an attempted burglary at the Highlander bookstore Sunday night around 10 p.m. The incident was first reported by a student who called campus security after observing broken glass and signs that someone had tampered with the lock on the exterior door facing Snelling Ave. Glass on the front door was broken and shattered onto the sidewalk, but the attempted burglars did not gain entry into the store.

According to Director of Safety and Security Terry Gorman, there were signs that the perpetrators attempted to pry their way through the lock. “It looks like they were getting pretty serious about trying to get in the place,” Gorman said.

Nothing was taken from the Highlander, but store managers were notified of the incident. The broken door was boarded up overnight and replaced with temporary glass the following day, until a more permanent piece is installed in the coming days. The door’s lock will also have to be replaced.

According to Gorman, the Lampert Building is equipped with several security systems and cameras, but no alarms were triggered during this incident. Gorman notified the St. Paul Police Department of the incident and an official investigation was opened to look into the matter. Gorman expressed his thanks to the student who reported the incident to security.
