Admissions applications have dropped by about 4 percent this year. The college had processed about 4,284 applications as of Monday.”Like last year, many colleges are up in [applications], many are down, some even – it’s a real mixed bag,” dean of admissions Lorne Robinson said in an e-mail.
The economic collapse last year created expectations that applications would drop significantly. This drop didn’t materialize last year. Macalester had a small decrease in number of applications received, but a much higher percentage of students accepted offers at Macalester than expected.
The college ended up with the largest freshman class since 1970. Estimating this year’s yield will be another challenge for admissions officers hoping to hit the target class size.
Robinson said no patterns have emerged as to which colleges gaining or losing applications.
