I am a Midwesterner. A native of the heartland. The blissful mid-section of America that prides itself on the good stuff: kindness, corn and four distinct seasons. (Real talk: I am from the western suburbs of Chicago.)
My friend Carrie Peterson, also a midwestern, Chicago lady, and I love to munch and crunch and gossip while indulging in our favorite Midwestern treat: the potato.
We don’t discriminate. We will try all things tater-related. Fried, baked, spiral cut or waffled. Any and all fries, tots or chips. We submit to the almighty potato. And every week we will report our findings back to you.
Barbette’s French Frites
Legitimately the best frites of my life. (And yes, they are frites at Barbette, not fries.) They were the perfect combination of crunchy, salted and piled high.
Crunchy. They were thin cut and each fry had a distinct crunch. Every bite as satisfying as the next. No soggy bottom fries here.
Salty. They were thoroughly salted upon arrival. I love that. All joy, no labor. I didn’t even have to pick up a salt shaker. But they weren’t overly salted, because you definitely don’t want a distraction from the starchy goodness.
Piled high. Carrie and I split a large order of frites, and it was more than enough for both of us to share. $7 is a bit steep for a large basket of fries (you can get a smaller one for $5), but you are given enough to share. If you go during happy hour the price shoots down to $5.
Overall: 10/10 Recommend Barbette Frites
