SEXY training begins, group run to Summit this weekend

Health & Wellness Center events this week include the beginning of SEXY training, Macalester’s safer sex education program. These trainings are provided for all first-year floors. They will begin on Sunday and continue through October 4th. First-year floor RAs will have details on the exact date of their floor’s training.

On Sunday, there will be a group run down Summit Avenue to the river and back. The group is meeting on Summit, outside of Dupre, at 3:00 p.m.. The run will take around thirty to forty minutes to complete, depending on individual pace.

This week’s Wellness Wednesday will be held in the Wellness Lounge of the Leonard Center from noon until 12:45. This week’s topic is Mindful Balance. Pam Leland, a community member and professional life coach, will be leading a discussion about balance and approaching the school year mindfully. A light lunch will be provided for those in attendance.

Consent is Mac pledge signing will take place on Thursday outside of the Campus Center on Bateman Plaza from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Consent is Mac t-shirts will be distributed at the event.

PROGRAM BOARD

Minnesota Zoo trip, Godzilla screening on tap

On Sunday, Program Board will be sponsoring a trip to the Minnesota Zoo. Buses will leave campus at noon. Program Board will be screening two movies in the next week: Godzilla tonight at 8:00 p.m., and Edge of Tomorrow next Friday, also at 8:00 p.m. Both films will be aired in JBD.

Program Board is currently selecting its First-Year Representative through an interview and application process. The representative will be announced soon.

MACALESTER-GROVELAND

Great Mac-Groveland Garage Sale held this Saturday

Tomorrow, dozens of houses around Macalester will take part in the Great Macalester-Groveland Garage Sale. The garage sale is an annual event coordinated by the Macalester-Groveland Community Council. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. and lasting until 3:00 p.m., a number of houses around the neighborhood will sell items in a coordinated effort designed to bring people outside and get them to explore the neighborhood. Maps with the locations of garage sales can be found online at macgrove.org, in addition to a directory of the types of items each house will be selling.

Dayton, Franken lead polls two months before election

The Minneapolis Star Tribune released the results of its latest poll, which showed current Gov. Mark Dayton leading Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson, the Republican challenger, by double digits (45 to 33 percent). 20 percent of voters are still undecided, and Independence Party candidate Hannah Nicollet drew one percent support. However, Dayton does hold a big advantage over Johnson in name recognition as a full third of prospective voters did not recognize Johnson’s name at all.

U.S. Senator Al Franken has a similarly sizeable lead (49 to 36 percent), over his GOP opponent, businessman Mike McFadden. Independence Party candidate Steve Carlson drew three percent. Franken, like Dayton, is running for a second term.

DEPARTMENT OF MULTICULTURAL LIFE

Carlos Andres Gomez will speak on masculinity

Today the Lealtad-Suzuki Center will be hosting the Identity Collectives’ and Host Family Program’s social and information session, from 4:30-6:00 p.m.. The LSC’s Identity Collectives are spaces of solidarity and discussion for students’ racial, ethnic, sexual, national, socioeconomic, and gender-related identities. Current members of identity collectives will be sharing their experiences. Newcomers are encouraged to attend and find identity collectives that represent them.

“Clicktivism: Activism in the 21st Century” will be held on Monday from 4:45-6:15 p.m., in the Cultural House kitchen. The benefits and drawbacks of social media activism, sometimes nicknamed “slacktivism,” will be discussed. This event is part of the DML’s TAPAS series.

On Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., renowned New York City based slam poet Carlos Andres Gomez will speak and perform “Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood” in Hill Ballroom. This event is a collaboration with Campus Life, Mr. M, MacSlams, and Adelante! Gomez recognizes its audience as potential agents of change for issues pertaining to masculinity and modern manhood.

CAMPUS ACTIVITIES AND OPERATIONS

Students, orgs can now check out P-cards all day

New Director of Campus Activites and Operations Joan Maze has instructed Card Services to allow students to check out and return P-Cards until 10:00 p.m. Last year, P-Cards would stop being issued at 4:30 p.m., the end of normal business hours. The student staff working the desk are also trained to answer questions regarding orgs and residential life. The goal is to make services more accessible on a student schedule, because students are usually busiest and in class during card services’ normal business hours.

P-Cards are debit cards that can be checked out to organizations and departments which allow them to make purchases.

“In order to be of service we need to be available at student times,” said Maze, director of Campus Activities and Operations. “We also want to help students be more accountable, so now if they check out a P-Card and we ask them to return it the same day, there is realistic way for them to do that.”

Vikings star Adrian Peterson indicted for child abuse

Minnesota Vikings football star Adrian Peterson was indicted by a Texas grand jury for child abuse last week and a warrant was issued for his arrest last Friday. Soon after, Peterson flew to Houston to turn himself in. The Vikings deactivated him for last Sunday’s home opener in response and Peterson posted a $15,000 bond but did not attend the game. The talented running back is accused of disciplining his four year-old son with a switch made from a tree branch, leaving cuts and bruises on the boy’s body.

Peterson accepted a voluntary suspension, without pay, while legal proceedings are underway. This severly reduces the chance he will play again this season. The Radisson hotel chain suspended its sponsorship of the team and Target and Nike have announced that they will stop selling his gear.

MCSG

Omnibus bill passes, Beckel plans sustainability initiative

On Tuesday, Sept. 16th MCSG unanimously approved an Omnibus Bill. The bill establishes a uniform numbering system for all bills and resolutions, and creates a designated timeframe under which the FAC must act. If the FAC does not act within this designated timeframe, the decision shifts to the Legislative Body.

SOC chair James Lindgren ’15, said that more sanctions were put in place in order to reactivate orgs that did not attend SOLO this year. There was unanimous LB approval of the four FAC At-Large members.

PB Chair Sana Naz ’16 announced that PB would still sponsor the Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Indians baseball game on Friday, Sept. 19th despite the racist tones of the Cleveland Indian’s mascot. Instead of cancelling the event, all attendees will be provided information about the issue and will have the option to wear buttons in protest of the mascot.

Rick Beckel, MCSG member for the class of ’15, will lead a sustainability initiative within MCSG in order for the body to better act in alignment with the goals of Macalester, such as being zero waste by 2020. Three members of the Judicial Council were unanimously approved by the LB. And next week the LB will elect a “Speaker of the Body” who will lead all meetings for the semester.

During the first LB meeting on Sept. 9th, the new Little Scots organization was approved $790. And Ari Hymoff ’17, AAC chair, announced the four new textbooks that were added to the textbook reserve program. Discussion about the implementation of a smoke free campus will be continued in the following weeks.
