Volleyball still seeking elusive conference win
Macalester Volleyball played two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) games this week, hosting Augsburg and traveling to Arden Hills, Minn. to face Bethel.
Augsburg played spoiler in the Leonard Center, as the home crowd — celebrating Pride Night — couldn’t will the close match to fall in the Scots’ favor.
While the game only went four sets, the Scots came within a point in the first set (24-26), won the second set (25-20), and played a season record nine set points in the final set which ended 33-31.
Ella Cohen-Richie ’28 had four aces in a great night serving, and Adonia Anene ’28 led the team with 16 kills and tallied 18 digs.
The match in Arden Hills also went to four sets, as Bethel emerged victorious in a fiery first set to take a commanding lead that was never relinquished.
Anene had a career high 22 kills, and Hannah Morrow ’27 tossed up 40 assists.
The losses moved the Scots to 3-19 overall and 0-8 in conference.
Look for their 7:00 p.m. tipoff in the Leonard Center on Oct. 31 in a spooky home game against Carleton College.
Football faces another tall task
Macalester football came off the St. John’s University matchup two weeks ago ready to play some programs they were perhaps more evenly matched with.
That wish was not answered this week, as they traveled to Arden Hills, Minn. to face a Bethel squad that’s ranked No. 4 in the country according to D3football.com.
The Scots put their best foot forward, but were again kept off the scoreboard despite gaining over 150 yards in a one sided contest.
Jason Weaver ’27 paced the Scots with 14 tackles, and Dylan Jeppe ’28 had 11.
Jack Scully ’28 had 119 yards through the air, and he connected with wide receiver Paxton Boyd ’28 for 58 of those. The young duo of Boyd and Scully continue to show a strong connection.
The Scots return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 in a home game against St. Olaf College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. They’ll seek their third win of the season and second win in MIAC play.
Men’s Soccer keeps rolling in lone match
Macalester racked up their sixth consecutive win this week, 4-1 in an intra-city matchup at Hamline University.
The Scots scored their first two goals off two set pieces within 90 seconds of each other. First it was Kasdan Blattman ’27 off a free kick, followed by a PK from Milan Shah ’29.
The Scots didn’t look back, as Zach Liptzin ’27 added to his team leading tally with his sixth goal of the season and Drew Moseman ’27 had to make just one save.
The team is heating up just in time for the MIAC playoffs, as they hold the second seed going into their final match of the season and are on track for a first round bye.
The Scots placed fifth in the Region IX United Soccer Coaches ranking.
Women’s Soccer wins thriller, extends streak
Women’s soccer needed a late winner at Hamline University and got it in the form of an 86th minute masterpiece from Julia Hanson ’27 that gave Mac their fifth straight game without a loss (4-0-1).
Despite holding a 9-2 advantage in the shot category, all it took was one, as the Scots iron curtain didn’t allow a single shot on goal all match. Abigail Heuga ’27 didn’t have to make a single save to record the shutout.
The Scots then traveled to Superior, Wis. on Tuesday for a rare late season non-conference game against the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
It was a big second half that lifted them to a fourth straight win, with Erica Hamilton ’28 and Mikayla Edmunds ’29 netting the decisive goals.
3-1 was the final from SCCU Stadium, in what will serve as a tuneup for the MIAC playoffs.
They’ll have halloween off, but no trick or treating for this Scot squad. They’ll close out their regular season on Nov. 1 at home against Bethel University, a 1 p.m. kick off.
That game will decide if the Scots go to the MIAC playoffs, as they’ll be in with a win over Bethel.
