In the most notable police activity involving Macalester students this fall, one student was arrested and charged with aggravated assault during an altercation at an off-campus party in the early hours of Saturday morning. Witnesses, who wished to remain anonymous, said that at roughly 1:00 a.m., two police officers entered a residence on St. Clair Ave., responding to complaints about a party hosted by Macalester students. Witnesses said the officers pepper-sprayed several students and arrested the host during a dispute shortly after the officers entered the house. According to the witnesses, the police arrived with an aggressive demeanor, repeatedly yelling obscenities at partygoers.Sgt. Kent Cleveland said police arrested the student after he allegedly assaulted an officer. Cleveland, who heads the Zero Adult Providers program at the Saint Paul police department, said police had taken hold of the student because of his aggressive behavior when the officers approached him. Several more police units arrived within minutes.
