Menƒ?TMs track settles for seventh at indoor finals

By Ian Ritz

Macalester menƒ?TMs track and field was not at itƒ?TMs fighting best at the MIAC Indoor Championships at Carleton College last weekend. Hampered by lingering injuries and sickness Mac performed below expectations, producing only 37 pointsƒ?”six fewer than last yearƒ?TMs total of 43. The news wasnƒ?TMt all bad, however, as the team managed to repeat its seventh place showing from last year, largely on the strength of excellent individual efforts from David Augustson ƒ?TM07 and Tyler Schwecke ƒ?TM08.Augustson, for his part, kept pace with his fine performances from earlier in the year, gaining All-MIAC honors by finishing second in the 1000m run with a time of 2:35.06. He also scored points for the Scots clocking a time of 4:23.85 in the mile run, good enough for fourth place.

Schwecke also received All-MIAC honors by taking third in the triple jump competition with an effort of 44-11 3/4 feet, just fractions of an inch out of second place. Schwecke scored additional points by placing seventh in the 55m dash with a time of 6.65 seconds.

Overall Mac fielded a larger team than in recent years coming into the Indoor Championshipsƒ?”a good sign for the programƒ?TMs futureƒ?”but the progress has yet to show up on paper. Mac for example finished over 30 points behind host Carleton, a team they beat by two points last year. Carleton may have boasted a better roster from years past, but the significant point differential had as much to do with problems afflicting Mac, rather than improvement on the Knights side, Augustson said.

ƒ?oeI think we could have challenged Carleton for the 6th spot if Tim Burns ƒ?TM06, Alex Wise ƒ?TM08, Nate Crider ƒ?TM08, and Josh Springer ƒ?TM08 were healthy all year,ƒ?? he said in an email. ƒ?oeThat group has proven theyƒ?TMre successful and represent a pretty substantial amount of potential team points.ƒ??

While flu-like symptoms and muscle injuries put a strain on the team, Mac was able to nab a series of seventh and eighth place finishes. Dylan Keith ƒ?TM07 went out strong and took seventh in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:21.16, while Crider and Springer picked up eighth place finishes in the 1,000 and 800-meter races respectively. Carson Gorecki ƒ?TM09 scored two points in the 55-meter high hurdles finishing seventh with a time of 8.33.

Burns also picked up a pair of eighth place finishes to cap off a solid indoor track and field career with a long jump of 20-9 and a triple jump of 41-6.

Not satisfied with the indoor performance,e the Scots are looking forward to the spring, where the team seeks to improve after finishing ninth out of 11 teams last season.

Schwecke for his part is looking to contribute in a big way. ƒ?oeI feel excited and enthused with a new goal of trying to win the MIAC title,ƒ?? he said. ƒ?oeItƒ?TMs gonna be a lot of work, but thatƒ?TMs the goal as well as improving on the seventh place finish indoors.ƒ??

The team will look to get healthy over the break before embarking on the outdoor campaign, which begins when the team travels to Atlanta for the Emory College invitational March 25.
