Menƒ?TMs Golf gets ready for MIAC

By Emily Dunn

It has been a slow start to the men’s golf season, but with one of the best teams the men have experienced in years they are looking forward to improved performances at the MIAC championships this weekend. With four middle place finishes throughout this season and a 7th place finish last year at MIAC, the men hope to finish this weekend’s match closer to golf strongholds Gustavus, St. John’s, and St. Thomas. “We’re looking forward to a strong performance at MIAC. Three out of the five of us who are playing are seniors, so this is our last shot to break through into the top tier and really surprise some people,” Tony Pratt ’07 said.
After battling 2005 national qualifier St. John’s two weekends ago on Sept. 16-17, the Scots placed 16th out of 19 teams at the St. John’s Invitational. As a team they posted a score of 668. Eric Kelsey ’07 placed 59th out of 104 players to lead the Scots. He posted a score of 81 on Saturday and 83 on Sunday for a combined total of 164. Behind him were Chris Olson ’08, who posted rounds of 81 and 85 and Pratt ’07 who scored 80 and 86. The two ended the weekend with identical two-rounds of 166.
Last weekend they had a similar showing at the Carleton/St. Olaf Invitational at the Summit golf course in Cannon Falls, Minn. The men placed 6th out of 11 teams, ending the weekend with a combined total of 636, 2 strokes behind St. Olaf.

“We are making our peak at the right time with conference tournament coming up, I am confident that we have the most talented team in my four years at Macalester,” Ben Finkenbinder ’07 said.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen this weekend, I know they really want it and they know that I want it for them,” head coach Martha Nause said.

The men share a strong camaraderie with each other that will make whatever outcome this weekend something to be proud of. Although in golf Macalester will never be favored to win their competitive conference they share a unity comparable to none. “Come next Monday this team will be smiling all the way home, leaving the rest of the MIAC behind to sob in the immaculate sand-traps of Bunker Hills,” Olson said.
“We’re not going to be top 2, but I believe that we can finish in the middle of the conference, and if that happens there won’t be any happier people than me and the team,” Nause added.

With their arms and minds ready, the men will travel to Coon Rapids, MN for the MIAC Championships this weekend at the Bunker Hills Golf Course. “We’d love to see some spectators wearing blue and orange. You’re sure to see plenty of gratuitous fist pumping, some pretty funny tantrums from the Tommies, and all the ladies can follow the ruggedly handsome Chris Olson around all day. It won’t be boring, I promise,” Pratt said.

“If you want to see true passion and charisma Macalester, I say put your beer bottles down for a couple of hours and drive out to Coon Rapids on Saturday or Sunday. You think Tiger Woods is the most exciting player in golf to watch? Think again my friend. Think again,” Olson added.
