The Groveland Tap’s daily specials are perfect for finals

Even Macalester students who haven’t been to the Groveland Tap, the bar and grill’s name is one everyone on campus is familiar with. Despite as the end of my sophomore year ends, I finally went to the St. Clair Avenue restaurant for the first time. I was intrigued by the daily specials, especially with $2.99 burgers every Monday 6 p.m. to 10p.m.

Some students may not know that every day of the week, the Tap offers a rotating special. The specials range from Bangers and Mash for $11.99 on Tuesdays to $2.99 tacos on Thursdays. Next to the ever popular “Burger Night” is “All-you-can-eat fish fry” Fridays, when for $11.99 you get as much beer battered fish, fries and slaw as you can eat.

When I received the burger, the buns were lightly toasted and had cheese dripping down the meat. The patty couldn’t have been more than quarter of a pound, but considering it cost a mere $2.49, I’m not complaining. In terms of quality, I can’t think of a better steal. The servers don’t ask how you want the meat to be cooked, and I think there’s a good reason to this. The meat had the perfect amount of juiciness and lightness—I almost ordered another burger.

I was also a big fan of the fries ($3). There are different varieties of fries: regular, cajun and parmesan-garlic. If cajun and parmesan-garlic aren’t your thing, the fresh-cracked pepper and “french fry salt” offered at every table are equally as good. Every burger is served with a complimentary side of coleslaw. The slaw adds a great light, tart flavor that balances the heavy, though delicious, burger and fries.

Another aspect of the Tap that tends to draw a significant Macalester crowd is weekly trivia on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. For over an hour, groups of students and community members alike partake in a battle of the minds to guess the answer to a variety of trivia questions. The competition is long, and with prizes at stake, often gets fierce.

As the end of the semester nears and you need to eat your stress away, I definitely recommend checking out some of the daily deals at one of the most popular restaurants for Macalester students. With outdoor seating, plenty of food options and great deals, I can’t wait to go back.
