Henry Harper ’20, from Oak Park, Illinois, is already a core member of the top seven of the men’s cross country team. He’s been running competitively for six years, but was exposed to the sport from a young age because his dad also ran cross country.

“I like pushing myself, seeing what I’m capable of, seeing how fast I can be. It’s really rewarding to break a PR,” Harper said when asked about why he likes running cross country.

Harper visited numerous other schools and met their cross country teams before deciding to come and run for Macalester. He said that among all of the other teams he met, the Macalester team was by far the best to be around. “Everyone is a character,” he said.

Harper plans to run indoor and outdoor track in the spring, as well as joining an intramural basketball team. Outside of sports, he is interested in photography, literature, philosophy and visual arts. In his free time he likes to listen to music. His favorite band is The Smiths, and he enjoys 80s alternative music as well as hip hop. He also enjoys playing video games.
