The Road to Paid Dues Tour featuring Murs w. Fashawn, Black Cloud Music & Kosha Dillz

His real name might be Nick Carter, but we won’t hold that against him because this West Coast rapper Murs is “the people’s champion of Los Angeles hip-hop.” His work with Fashawn has been called “exceptional chemistry” between two artists known for their performances.

Chasing Ice

As if Macalester students need any convincing about the effects of climate change, this documentary by National Geographic environmental photographer James Balog will blow your mind about what is happening to the world’s ice caps, and do so with stunningly beautiful cinematography.

Searching for Sugar Man

$7-9, at Landmark Lagoon Cinema, Sat & Sun 12:20, 2:30, 4:40, Fri & Mon-Thurs 2:30, 4:40

This is the best documentary of the year. Need we say more? This film is by a Swedish director about a Mexican-American musician from Detroit who inspired many South Africans in the 1970’s. Now that’s multiculturalism. The story of Rodriguez is an amazing one and absolutely worth the trek to Uptown.

Elemeno Pea

Want to see a thoughtful, heartfelt, and hilarious piece on race and class? Then this one is for you. A “comedy of bad manners,” Elemeno Pea is about the over-educated and underemployed, Devon, who works at Olive Garden because she is unable to find work in her field. When she visits her sister in Martha’s Vineyard, hilarity ensues. If you go to the Sunday peformance, be sure to stick around for the Salon panel discussion of “Modern Servant Culture” afterwards.

N.I.G.G.E.R.

Check out the opening night of “an experimental examination of the residual impact of this word (through a female lens).” This solo work by Shá Cage combines music, interviews, monologues, and movement to tell 10 characters’ stories.

Free Things at the Walker!

Who doesn’t like a free day at the Walker? March’s first free Saturday is this weekend, so take the day to enjoy some film and visual art. Also free this week: the Architecture Minnesota sponsored series of short videos “Videotect 3: The City of the Future,” on Thursday only at 7:00pm. These short films are said to locate our future amidst works like Blade Runner, Brazil, and Ecotopia.

Artist Talk: Laylah Ali

Weisman Art Museum, University of Minnesota, Thurs. March 7, 7:00pm

This talk accompanies the artist’s exhibition of her work, The Greenheads Series (1996-2005). Dystopian, violent, and darkly funny, these gouache paintings are manifestations of ideas of political and social resistance.
