If you are anything like me and have a massive sweet tooth, or are just craving some suga suga, these three joints won’t disappoint! Because of my love affair with donuts, some great dessert places that offer other sweets did not make the cut (so hopefully you like donuts).
1. Mojo Monkey Donuts ($) –
1169 7th St W, St Paul – Distance from campus: 2.8 miles
This place is the best. Located on West 7th Street in St. Paul, this hidden gem is only a 7 minute drive from campus. If you’re an early bird, you’re in luck: Mojo opens at 6 a.m. on weekdays, and 6:30 a.m. on the weekends. If you’re a night owl, you’re going to have to satisfy your donut craving before 6 p.m. With nine different styles of donuts and endless flavor combinations, this place is worth the early wake-up. If you’re a fan of a classic donut, you can choose from ten different flavors of cake donuts such as cinnamon-sugar, apple dumpling, red velvet, german chocolate or mango glaze with coconut (a personal favorite.) If you’re a more adventurous donut consumer (me), then go for a crème Brûlée bismarck, a root beer icing and Oreo raised donut, pumpkin eggnog donut holes or a banana pecan caramel fritter. Even though the menu is vast, Mojo Monkey still has daily specials that never disappoint. If you don’t like donuts but are craving something sweet, try a cranberry orange danish or a cinnamon bun. If you need something to dunk your donut in, Mojo offers a wide array of hot and cold drinks, and a $1 cup of coffee! If you haven’t gotten the point already, this place is fantastic, cheap and a 25-minute ride from campus on the 84 and 74 buses.
2. Glam Doll donuts ($$) –
2605 Nicollet Ave S, Minneapolis – Distance from campus: 7 miles
Started by two funky ladies, this place is a great late-night spot with a great retro feel. Open until 9 p.m. on weekdays and 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Glam Doll is a great way to end the night (or get it started!). With six different styles to choose from (including vegan!) this place offers unique flavored donuts with unique names. My personal favorite is the “Night Moves” cake donut, which has blackberry jam, blackberry HENNESSY icing and brown sugar bits. Some other great choices include the salted caramel and chocolate “Calendar Girl,” the tres leches “peek-a-boo” or the chocolate and caramelized bacon “scream queen.” If those options didn’t sound funky enough for you, try the peanut butter and sriracha “chart topper,” the spiced mexican chocolate and cayenne pecans “bombshell” or the lemon cream cheese, cherry icing and brown butter crumb topping “outlaw.” Glam Doll also offers weekly specials that often feature in-season and local ingredients, and savory options such an everything bagel donut with a cream cheese glaze. While a little pricier and further from campus, this place will be sure to satisfy any late-night sweet tooth.
3. Milkjam Creamery ($-$$) –
2743 Lyndale Ave, Minneapolis – Distance from campus: 8.2 miles
This is probably the only time I will review a food vendor before actually eating from it, but this place looks too good to leave out. Opened in early 2016, Milkjam creamery offers unique ice cream flavors such as thai tea, poppin bottles (champagne), black fig and mezcal and cereal killer (fruity pebbles). Not only does this place offer creative flavors that change daily, but they also offer adult ice cream floats (21+), ice cream cake slices, sundaes, and ice cream sandwiches made with GLAM DOLL DONUTS! Even though Milkjam just opened, it is the talk of the local Instagram food world, and if you look at pictures snapped here you won’t be able to resist. While it is a bit further from campus (15 minutes driving) this is a great place for a special occasion treat that won’t break the bank. If you need to stress eat or just love ice cream, you can get a scoop of each of the sixteen flavors on a tray for $56 (this is probably best shared). I am giving up dessert until April to test my willpower, but this will be my first stop on April 1st.
