The Great Potato Tour: Red Cow’s Poutine

This week my potato trek took me to Red Cow on Selby Avenue, for some delightful happy hour potato specials. The late night happy hour at Red Cow begins at 10 p.m., and when I arrived at 10:30 p.m., I was seated right away.

When I first eyed their happy hour specials I was drawn to their specialty poutines. They offer two types: braised beef & Summit beer cheese or apple, bacon & bleu cheese poutine. Both options sounded unique and appealing, but I was craving something hearty so I opted for the beef & beer cheese option, only to have the apple, bacon & bleu cheese poutine arrive at my table. Clearly, the potato gods were making their move and insisting I stretch my comfort zone (or the waiter misheard me…either way, I was in for a treat!).

The skillet of fries layered in bleu cheese, apples and bacon pieces was enormous. So much larger than I imagined it would be. Enough to split with at least one other person, if not two people. They didn’t skimp on the bacon, and the gravy wasn’t overbearing. There were some fries on the outskirts completely untouched, a perfect solace when the toppings got to be too heavy. The apples offered a tart crunch which contrast nicely with the savory bleu cheese. For $6 you get more potatoes than you need, and I would definitely head back to try their other variety.
